Our team are exploring different and novel ways for young people to enter the pharmaceutical industry. The intention is to create a new option that enables students to undertake university studies while providing invaluable on-the-job training as typically occurs with a standard apprenticeship, without facing the debts incurred paying for university tuition. The aim is to address the current shortfall in candidates and reduce the currently employment burden seen as a consequence the imbalance in supply and demand.
The new education path that the UK government just started will be used by the Clinical Trials Specialist Degree Apprenticeship. This path blends the best parts of higher education and vocational training. Students will learn everything they need to know to work in the field over the course of 4.5 years. The study will also lead to a BSc Hons in life sciences.
We are currently finalising plans for how the initiative can be rolled-out. After a year of collaboration the team have succeeded in having the standards for End Point Assessments approved and we are now going forward to Route Panel. Hannah Barry (GSK), Project Lead says “The group is now moving away from a trailblazing exercise, where we were creating an apprenticeship scheme, to a stargazing exercise, where we can works on strategies to support employers in introducing apprentices into the workplace”.
Many thanks to PRA Health Sciences in Green Park for hosting participants from a diverse set of industry partners large and small.
