ApaTech

Project background
ApaTech was a medical device company founded in 2001 as a spin-out from Queen Mary University of London’s Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Biomedical Materials. The company’s primary focus was on orthobiologics, specifically the development of synthetic bone graft materials to enhance bone repair and regeneration. ApaTech’s innovations were grounded in bioactive materials that promoted osteoconduction and osteoinduction, essential for effective bone healing. Its key products included: Actifuse: A bioactive synthetic bone graft material designed to encourage natural bone growth. It was widely used in spinal fusion procedures, bone defect repairs, and trauma surgeries . ApaPore: A porous hydroxyapatite-based material for orthopedic and spinal applications. It provided a scaffold-like structure to support bone regeneration and integration . ApaTech’s products were distributed across Europe, the US, and other regions, gaining recognition for their effectiveness in both minimally invasive and traditional surgical applications. In 2010, Baxter International acquired ApaTech for $330 million, integrating its technologies into Baxter’s biologics portfolio to enhance offerings in bone and surgical repair solutions.
Delivery

ApaTech approached NST at the start of 2008 looking for support in the conduct of the their preclinical operations and dissemination activities around their portfolio of innovative synthetic bone derivatives. The NST medical writing team first performed a gap analysis around the reporting of non-clinical evidence being funded by ApaTech. After this, NST created a strategic communication plan for Actifuse and ApaPore products that addressed company's strategic goals and underlying scientific messages and the available channels for their dissemination.

The NST team was engaged to deliver the various communication vehicles key to the plan's implementation, involving the provision of editorial and medical writing support – including regulatory documents, scientific manuscripts, conference publications, etc.
